Potential to Dramatically Increase the Number of Heart Transplants
With the OCS, surgeons can now increase the number of hearts they accept for transplant without compromising outcomes:
- Preserve More Hearts with Portable Perfusion: By perfusing the heart from harvest to transplant, the OCS maintains the heart in a near-physiological, metabolically active state that allows surgeons to preserve LVH and long-distance hearts.
- Accept More Hearts with Ex-Vivo Monitoring: By monitoring key parameters of the metabolically active heart ex-vivo, surgeons may use their medical judgement to assess a potentially suitable heart's quality and function outside the brain-death environment.
Together these new capabilities will make it possible to increase the number of transplant procedures a center can perform without relying on an increase in organ donation rate.
